The Statistician General (SG) and CEO of Stats SL, who is also the Vice-Chair of the United Nations Statistical Commission, Professor Osman Sankoh COR, on Thursday 21st July 2022 introduced to diverse partners the new Stats SL project named “Comprehensive Health and Epidemiological Surveillance System (CHESS)”.

The project is funded by the World Bank to improve the generation of research data at the community level in Sierra Leone which will contribute to planning and policy making.

Participants came from the universities, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, National Civil Registration Authority, Medical Research Centre, King’s Partnership, UNICEF, UNFPA and Stats SL to be introduced to the project at its inception meeting.

Three sites will sequentially be established, one fully urban, another fully rural and a third peri-urban in districts that will be identified based on objective criteria. A technical team is being constituted to agree on indicators and select the districts in a transparent manner.

CHESS will be based on the foundation of Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) to include both mortality and morbidity assessment in the communities.

More details on HDSS and CHESS can be found in the two key papers published by the SG which can be accessed through the links provided.
