About US

Statistics Sierra Leone (SSL) was constitutionally effected by the 2002 Statistics and Census Act. SSL replaces the former Central Statistics Office, which had been in operation since independence in 1961.

 Mission/Goal

Statistics Sierra Leone coordinates, collects, compiles, analyses and disseminates high quality and objective official statistics to assist informed decision-making, and discussion within the government, business and the media, as well as the wider national and international community.

SSL is currently going through a restructuring phase and a National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) in Sierra Leone has been developed. The NSDS focuses on a five (5) year statistical work programme which priorities statistical activities aimed at achieving national goals and targets that include progress and performance against the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Poverty Reduction.

Over the years, the institution has conducted series of surveys with support from its partners. Recently, the office conducted the first ever Sierra Leone Demographic and Health Survey (SLDHS), which is part of a worldwide survey programme and it is currently in the data entry and processing stage. The Survey monitors and tracks down Infant Mortality, the rate of HIV/AIDS, Anemia, Child Labour, Reproduction, effects of Female Genital Mutilation, and the use of Contraceptives.

The SLDHS will  be conducted after every five (5) years, and will periodically monitor and provide an international database that can be used by researchers investigating topics related to population, health and nutrition.

 Structure

A fourteen (14) member Council supervises Statistics Sierra Leone. Six of the members (Chairman, Regional Representatives and the Statistician General) are nominated by the President and approved by Parliament. The other positions are filled by ex-officio members.

Management is headed by the Statistician General and below him is the Deputy Statistician General and Directors of Divisions. The administrative divisions are directly under the Statistician General.

Statistics Sierra Leone has increased the three (3) regional offices -Bo, Kenema, Makeni- to fourteen (14) district offices and they are being managed by the Deputy Statistician General.

Current Staff strength is one hundred and sixty one (161) for which the institution is regularly seeking funding to support their capacity and personal development activities. Staff is highly committed in quality work delivery, as formulation of both institutional and national development strategies highly rely on the data they collect and disseminate.

Divisions

The office has three main divisions:

Economic Statistics: This division focuses on providing robust economic indicators with the primary objectives of providing data for development planning, monitoring progress towards achieving the MDGs and Poverty Reduction, meeting the macroeconomic data requirements of multilateral agencies such as ECOWAS, IMF, World Bank, ILO, UNSD, etc.

Demographic Social and Regional Statistics: This division covers statistical data on population issues: education, health, gender and other social statistics. It provides timely and accurate data for policy planning and formulation for the country and it helps to design appropriate strategies to monitor the impact of some indicators on the labour force, poverty-reduction and economic growth within the country.

A Geographical Information System (GIS): This is a computer-based information system that captures, stores, manipulates, analyses and displays spatially referenced and associated tabular attributed data. Geographic Information System has taken advantage of rapid development in micro processing technology to address the special challenges of storing and analysing spatial data.

Data Processing:  The division is primarily responsible for the processing of all censuses and surveys undertaken by Statistics Sierra Leone and also providing technical support in relation to information Technology and managing the Institution’s website.  The division currently has three sections that are working in collaboration to achieving the goals of the division.  The sections include:

a)   Computer Programming and Data Management

b)   Systems Management and Networking

c)   Data Archiving and Dissemination and Library

Funding

Statistics Sierra Leone is funded mainly by the Government of Sierra Leone, but from time to time, some of its activities are also supported by the UN family, DFID, EU and other Partners.
